What is Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is not a disease in itself
but rather it is a group of symptoms that together
characterize a specific disorder or disease. Another
way to look at metabolic syndrome is as a group of
risk factors consisting of high blood pressure,
high blood sugar, high cholesterol levels, and abdominal
fat,
ordinarily referred to as spare tire.

Obviously, having any one of these risk factors is bad in and of
itself. Then consider when the four conditions are combined
together. It creates a scary scenario indeed. Quadruple
whammy. These risk factors greatly increase the risk of a
cardiovascular event such as heart attack and strokes. They
increase your risk of diabetes by a factor of 5.

The history of metabolic syndrome is recent as it has less than
20 years of recorded medical history but today metabolic
syndrome is as widespread as the common cold. The American
Heart Association estimates about every one in six American,
i.e., about 47 million people suffer from metabolic syndrome.
But the good news is that it can be controlled, largely
with changes to your lifestyle.

There are five risk factors that make up metabolic
syndrome.

  1. The first risk factor is a large waist size of 40
inches or lager for men compared to 35 inches or lager
    for women.
  2. The second risk factor comprises of triglyceride levels of
    150 mg/dL or higher
or a person already on a cholesterol
    medication.
  3. Low good cholesterol [HDL] levels of less than 40 mg/dL
for men and less than 50 mg/dL for women is the third
    factor.
  4. The fourth risk group involves persons with having blood
pressure of 130/85 mm Hg or greater
    .
  5. The fifth risk factor is having a High Fasting Glucose
Level of 100 mg/dL or higher
    .

To be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, you would
have at least three of these risk factors.
